Why You Need to Enjoy Your Workout

These days, we have more options than ever for working out. Whether you are a lone treadmill warrior, a diehard yogi, or obsessed with HIIT workouts, it’s important to have a workout that you love and want to continue to do regularly. However, this can be easier said than done. For many people, working out feels like a chore. This feeling is aggravated when the workout of choice is something you don’t particularly enjoy doing. Finding a workout that is actually fun can be a challenge for some, but it is a necessary endeavor. In this blog, we will go over why it is important to enjoy your workout.

Consistency

Exercise is exercise. So why does it matter what kind you do and how much you enjoy it? After all, if you are really motivated to get fit, won’t you go work out regardless? Yes, at the beginning of your fitness journey, the desire to be healthy, lose weight, gain muscle, or whatever your goal is, may be enough to get to the gym. You may think that because a certain exercise is allegedly aligned with your goals (say, a workout that is supposed to be great for your glutes when you aim to get a killer booty), you should stick with it, even if you aren’t really enjoying it. However, while you SHOULD work out, your focus should not be on what you SHOULD do, but what you WANT to do. If you hate what you are doing to workout, with time, you will run out of steam. If working out feels like a giant chore now, just imagine how you will feel after a few months, if you are even still going at that point. The most important element of actually accomplishing your exercise goals is consistency. If you aren’t working out consistently, you will not see the results you want. However, if you are not doing a workout that you truly like, then you will not go consistently. When you like your workout, it is a lot easier to incorporate exercise into your routine because you actually WANT to workout. It isn’t a chore that you have to pencil and and feel relieved to cancel; it is a must-have on your calendar and you prioritize it above all else.

Safety

Additionally, working out in a way you don’t enjoy can also be a safety risk. If you are not super into your workout, you are not as focused because you are just thinking about how much you want it to be over. This can lead to you neglecting your form and technique, which is particularly risky when lifting weights. You could end up injured simply because you aren’t actively engaged in what you are doing. When you love a workout, you are more likely to spend more time making sure you are doing it safely.

Mental Gains

Finally, what you mentally get out of working out is just as important as what you get physically. For example, while long runs might help you shed some pounds, if you find them boring and frustrating, you are not getting the full benefit of exercise. When we work out doing something we love, it gives us a sense of satisfaction. Our feel-good hormones that are released make it so we can’t wait to get back to working out again. If you don’t actually like working out, you are missing out on the critical mental component of exercise.
